How Can I Help Someone?

Maybe someone you know uses Drugs or Alcohol too much. It might be a parent, brother, sister or a friend. You can help them by helping yourself as follows.

Get Information
This means read and ask questions. It’s cool to know the whole story and have good advice for people who need it. To get practical advice or to find out where to get more information contact our "Live Advice" (click "Live Advice" button in the panel on the left).

Ask for Help!
Sometimes people become embarrassed and don’t like to ask for help. The important thing to realise is that there are trained professionals ready to help you and that it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help - it is a sign of STRENGTH!

Things you can do
If you are worried about the situation of someone who uses alcohol or drugs too much, talk to somebody you trust. The important thing is to talk to someone. It may seem hard. You may ask who can I talk to? What about your parents, brother, sister, friend, other family member, teacher or the many help lines you can find in the phone book.

We also have a counselling service available here at the DAP's offices. Just phone (01) 836-0911.
