Drugs Information: Inhalants

Maybe you haven't heard of inhalants but the chances are you have probably come across them without realising, in items such as hair spray and polish.

Some people inhale the vapours from these products and that is why they are called inhalants.

Why?

These inhalants contain chemicals which affect the way the brain works and give people a very short-lived feeling of pleasure. However the vapours contain more than the chemical that makes you feel happy.

Some of the vapours actually attach themselves to those nerve cells called 'myelin' and eat away at them. When this happens the nerve cells break down and are no longer able to function.

Excessive inhalant abuse has resulted in a wide range of conditions from simple loss of memory to death in some cases.
